This is a protective scroll. It begins with an illumination in yellow, blue, brown and black, featuring three figures and a type of ornate cross. There are five sections of text down the length of the scroll, each separated by an illumination. There are six illuminations in total. They feature human images, crosses and patterns. Specialist research is needed.

An Ethiopic codex and scroll, together in a small leather pouch.

The codex contains ʾArdǝʾt (‘The Disciples’) a magico-apocryphal text. This is the Christian recension (as opposed to the Beta ʾƎsrāʾel/Ethiopian Jewish recension).


The second item is a protective scroll.

This is a manuscript entitled "A Selection from the Collects", by Louisa Mary Freeman. Each page is highly illuminated, and includes a prayer and a note indicating when to recite said prayer (for example 'Sixth Sunday after Epiphany', and 'Ninth Sunday after Trinity'), a decorated initial, and richly illuminated borders.


Also includes a contemporary carte de visite portrait of Louisa Mary Freeman, taken by Hennah & Kent in Brighton.

Scope and Contents MS La.III.522 is a composite manuscript of late-sixteenth and/or early-seventeenth century pieces of calligraphy, assembled by a later collector. The bulk of the manuscript is a combination of two different calligraphic alphabets with sample-texts, which follow the aspect and structure of early-modern writing-books. One of these decorative alphabets is composed of gothic, knotwork intials, while the other is structured by Roman capital letters against backgrounds of delicate, swirling vines....
